Photometric variability of the SMC W-R binary HD 5980*

Abstract

We present the results of a photometric monitoring campaign of the W-R binary HD 5980 conducted in November-December 1995, 16 months after the LBV-like outburst of one of the components of the system. On the basis of almost 800 y-band measurements, an improved orbital ephemeris is derived. We also report the discovery of a coherent 6 h periodic oscillation visible in the Strömgren b and y bands with amplitudes $\sim 0\hbox{$.\!\!^{\rm m}$}025$. This short period may be related to pulsations of the primary or secondary component.
