Received 20 March 1997 / Accepted 28 April 1997 Abstract We analyze archival ROSAT data of the CrA star forming region. X-ray emission from five infrared Class I protostars in the Coronet cluster was recently found in ASCA data, however, with low spatial resolution and partly ambiguous source identification. ROSAT high spatial resolution data confirm the X-ray detection of three Class I protostars. The other two infrared protostars might be extincted to strongly for being detected in the softer ROSAT bandpass. Alternatively, the X-ray emission might be strongly variable and they might have been too faint in X-rays at the time of the ROSAT observations. Key words: Stars:
