2D Speckle polarimetry of Z Canis Majoris

We present the first high angular resolution polarization measurements of the pre-main sequence binary system Z CMa at [FORMULA] m. Both binary components are polarized. The polarization of the infrared primary ([FORMULA], [FORMULA]) is near to that of the total system and is likely connected to the `outflow configuration'. The secondary shows an unexpected large polarization degree ([FORMULA]) at the position angle ([FORMULA]) different to that of the primary. This high polarization can be explained by a circumstellar accretion disk seen more pole-on than edge-on. The results are discussed with respect to the formation mechanisms of young binary stars.
